HYDROLOGIC AND HYDRAULIC MODELING OF THE YAUGER PARK DRAINAGE BASIN, OLYMPIA, WA

The City of Olympia contracted with Clear Creek Solutions to provide hydrologic and hydraulic modeling services to develop solutions to reduce flooding in the Yauger Park drainage system caused by large events like the December 2007 flood.
The hydrologic and hydraulic model results for each alternative solution were summarized together with the required capital improvements in a report submitted to the City. These alternative solutions included modeling the effects of management, facility improvements, and modifications to the Yauger Park stormwater drainage system. Different scenarios were run and compared with the calibrated model to view the effect the modification(s) make to the drainage system.
The Western Washington Hydrology Model (WWHM) was used to model the stormwater runoff from the 1,022-acre Yauger Park drainage basin. WWHM used HSPF to generate the stormwater runoff and SWMM to route the runoff through the City's conveyance system to Budd Inlet.
Flood frequency and other flow statistics were generated from the WWHM results. Capital improvements were included in the models to evaluate their performance prior to determining their recommended priority for implementation.
